Working at the Royal Court, he needs to look smart, and so wears one every day. And for the past year, he has worn a different tie every day to raise money for charity.
The deputy Greffier has now clocked up a different tie for almost 350 days in order to raise funds for Victim Support.
‘It just started as something a bit quirky,’ he said.
‘I just thought I’ve got loads of them so I set myself a challenge to wear a different one every day and never repeat them.’
Remarkably, most of the ties are his own, although he has bought a few from charity shops along the way and been gifted some from supporters.
‘I started almost exactly a year ago, and am now at nearly 350. I’m not at 365 because at first I wasn’t doing this at weekends.
'That soon changed and I’ve been popping on the more grotty ones, which aren’t good enough for work, at weekends. I’ve got a stacking drawer of ties and a few boxes in the loft.’
Mr Hamon hopes to raise £500 for the charity and has been posting pictures of his tie-wearing on a special Facebook page.
‘Victim Support are based within the Royal Court and we see the important work they do,’ he said. ‘We are currently at £345 but I would love to think we could double that initial target.’
The self-confessed neckwear enthusiast said he enjoys wearing ties even away from work.
‘I love them. I think they enhance an outfit,’ he said. ‘People appreciate it when you make the effort. When you are wearing a dark suit, there are only certain ways you can show your personality and add a bit of colour – ties and socks are about it.’
‘I do despair a little at the modern workplace and I get frustrated when I walk into a bank and its a dress-down Friday.’
Mr Hamon is now deciding when to stop and tie a Windsor knot across the challenge.
‘I’ve got enough for another three or four more months, which could get me to 500, which is a nice round number. I’m not sure I have the will to go on beyond that.’
And at the end Mr Hamon is considering raising more money by giving islanders the chance to brighten up their own wardrobes.
‘I’m considering a sale or auction of the surplus ones to raise a few more pounds,’ he said. ‘There are so many good causes out there which need our support.’
