There are plenty of events being planned for Liberation Day 2026, including the cavalcade and lots of activity in the centre of St Peter Port.
‘Many volunteers generously give their time to support the event, and sponsorship is how the business community can stand alongside them and give back on a day of reflection and celebration of freedom.
‘This support demonstrates the strength of our island community, united 81 years after liberation from German Occupation,’ said Deputy Andy Cameron, vice-president and Liberation Day lead for the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture.
Last week in the States Deputy Cameron raised the prospect of formal States-backed recognition for businesses who fulfil their corporate social responsibilities, including a certificate or a mark that could be displayed.
He wondered if this could help unlock more private support for events.
Policy & Resources Committee president Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez said the idea was interesting but not one that had been previously considered.
She invited Deputy Cameron to speak to her committee about it.
The States said it needed corporate sponsorship to enhance the variety of Liberation Day entertainment as most of the organising budget was used on event logistics.
Corporate backing enabled a wider range of attractions, it said.
‘With a renewed focus on St Peter Port activities in May, where many local businesses are based, sponsoring Liberation Day is an excellent opportunity to promote your business, raise your profile, and play a role in delivering a landmark community event,’ Deputy Cameron added.
‘Each and every Liberation Day is an important day for our island, and the support of local businesses is significant in helping to create an experience that islanders will remember long after the celebrations have ended.’
Helen Glencross, head of culture & heritage services, said that ‘a fantastic programme’ was being pulled together for 9 May. St Peter Port can expect to see a music stage, tea tent, children’s zone and fireworks.
‘Ensuring that we make every Liberation Day a truly special event is at the heart of what we do as the Liberation Day Organising Committee, with a particular consideration for those among us who lived through the Occupation and for whom this day carries deep personal meaning. and look forward to sharing it with islanders in due course,’ she said.
‘We are extremely grateful to everyone who has already offered their support, including sponsorship for individual and residential home hampers.
‘Every commitment, large or small, plays a vital role in helping us mark the significance of the day.’
