In lieu of carrier bag sales, the department store in Les Capelles has been making donations to support the environmental charity.
Its most recent donation has allowed La Societe to spruce up its offering at La Claire Mare nature reserve.
Aladdin’s Cave joint managing director Jason Mahy described the scheme, which has been running for the last three years, as ‘a bit of a double-edged sword’. 'If a customer needs a bag that money goes to La Societe,’ he said.
‘It’s 20p a bag, so does add up over time. We have already donated almost £5,000.’
Despite being happy with the amount being donated, Mr Mahy said it still showed the community had further to go to end reliance on single-use plastic bags.
‘It raises money but it shows that too many people are still using single-use plastic bags. Tens of thousands of people go through our shop and most of our customers do not take a bag because their vehicle is usually only a few yards from the exit, but in some cases it is unavoidable.’
He added that La Societe was the obvious choice to benefit.
‘There’s an element of offsetting that environmental impact as the work La Societe does is so important,’ he said.
‘Especially with engaging the younger generation in wildlife and the environment.’
La Societe President Trevor Bourgaize said that donations like this allowed the organisation to go that bit further than just routine maintenance.
‘We are really thankful to Aladdin’s Cave, their donation has helped pay for a new children’s information board, installed just last week at La Claire Mare,’ he said. ‘It’s just one example of the sort of thing they do with donations like this.’
Mr Bourgaize described the wetland meadows on the west coast between Perelle and L’Eree as a ‘hidden gem’.
‘A lot of people are not aware of where it is and the wonderful wildlife you can see here,’ he said.
‘It will soon be spring and the chiffchaffs will be arriving soon, they are the first of the warblers to visit, followed by sand martins and blackcaps, which all come through here.
‘Even in winter you can see Snipe and our resident marsh harriers.’
