Baby Scarlett makes shock arrival in car park of PEH

Last Friday night is not one that the Sarre family are likely to forget any time soon after its newest member, baby Scarlett, was delivered in the Princess Elizabeth Hospital car park by her grandmother.

Scarlett Sarre was born in the car park after mum Beth went into labour late on Friday night.

The family headed to the hospital but Scarlett wished to make an appearance before they reached the doors.

By the time hospital staff had raced out to the car she had already arrived.

It was Miss Sarre’s third child and said that this time was much quicker than her two previous deliveries.

‘She was two days overdue. We’d already been to the hospital earlier that day and they sent us home so we started looking at ways to speed things along a bit. We found out that pineapple would help, so we went to the chippy and got a pineapple fritter,’ said dad Brendan Topley.

‘Beth woke up at about midnight with contractions and told me 20 minutes later. I said I think we need to get to the hospital as her contractions were only 40 seconds apart – it took us a while to get to the car because they were so close together.’

Miss Sarre’s mum, Kerry, met her daughter and Mr Topley at the hospital and said that she could tell that the baby was going to come straight away.

‘I was in the front of the car and delivered the baby,’ she said.

‘I was scared to death, I was worried I was going to drop the baby. The staff weren’t there yet when she was born – it all happened so quick.

‘It was a bit of a weird one, but I am so proud of her.’

Once she had given birth, porters arrived to take Miss Sarre and her new daughter up to Loveridge Ward. She said that they could not have been more helpful.

‘They were brilliant help, there were two male porters who helped me up and when we were in the car they helped trying to start the car to turn the heaters on to keep her warm,’ she said.

‘They were chucking loads of warm towels on to us,’ added Mrs Sarre.

‘The emergency staff were fantastic and deserve some good press.’
