The challenge will see two marine ambulance volunteers drive a bright yellow floating Daihatsu across the Little Russel from Guernsey to Herm and Sark later this year, and the car in question will be on display at La Couture Inn for the fundraising evening.
‘This is a cause that is close to my heart as my father, Rene, had a long career with the ambulance service and crewed on both the current Flying Christine III and her predecessor, Flying Christine II. When he died, his ashes were scattered from the Flying Christine,’ said La Couture landlord Darren Davison.
‘I am looking forward to hosting the floating car and giving people a chance to see the car up close before it embarks on its challenge later this year.’
The challenge is a recreation of a 1993 fundraiser which saw volunteers Gary Ward and Paul Phillips make their voyage to Sark in a Fiat Uno in an effort to raise money for the construction of the first Flying Christine. The same duo will be at the helm of the Daihatsu in 2026 as well, this time raising money for the Flying Christine III.
‘We had great feedback from the public when we took the car to the Seafront Sunday a few weeks ago,’ said Mr Phillips.
‘We now want to get the car out to as many places and events as possible during the summer, starting with La Couture this week.’
Tickets for the meat draw will be on sale from 6pm at the inn, with the draw taking place at 7pm.
The St John Ambulance and Rescue Service also accepts donations via its website, which features a dedicated ‘Support the Flying Christine’ button.
