Development & Planning Authority president Deputy Neil Inder, said that helping to make multi-generational living easier has been on his agenda since he took up the post.
He said the service needed to do ‘a better job’ of showing people what is possible.
‘Those who have the space need to know how easy it can be to get permission to build,’ he said.
‘Especially at a time when it’s still difficult to get on the property ladder. People often say “planning will never allow that”, but planning isn’t the blocker that people think it is.’
Under the current Island Development Plan, proposals to alter or extend a residential property will be supported by the DPA, as long as certain criteria are met. Those looking to make room for adult family members are asked to contact the DPA.
The planning service will be holding drop-in events for further information. Guidance on multi-generational living has been published at gov.gg/multigenliving.
