Creatives invited to take over Tea Tent for Liberation after-party

As the sun sets on Liberation Day, artists, performers and creatives are being invited to take over the prime-positioned Tea Tent free of charge and get the after-party started.

‘Liberation Day should evolve as well as commemorate,’ said Andy Cameron, vice-president and Liberation Day lead for the Committee for Education, Sport and Culture.

Pitched amongst the evening’s celebrations, fireworks and live music at Albert Pier, Guernsey Arts and the Liberation Day’s organising committee are offering the tent, for the first time to any artists, entertainers, DJs or performers who can transform the serene-by-day sanctuary into a lively-by-night exciting hub for younger people to enjoy.

‘Liberation Day should evolve as well as commemorate,’ said Andy Cameron, vice-president and Liberation Day lead for the Committee for Education, Sport and Culture.

‘Alongside the traditional programme, we want to see a vibrant evening atmosphere that appeals to younger islanders.

‘The Tea Tent is a perfect space for DJs and contemporary acts to create that energy and bring a new audience into the celebrations.

‘We’d also encourage local businesses to get behind this opportunity, whether through sponsorship or support, to help create something really special for the community.’

Helen Glencross, head of Culture & Heritage Services, said the venue will be provided for free.

‘The rest is entirely up to you,’ she said.

‘We hope it presents an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to connect with the community in a truly memorable way.’

All local creatives are invited to propose any take-over ideas – considering the tent’s informal nature, accessibility and audience engagement.

‘This is an invitation to connect with an engaged audience in a truly unique setting,’ said Russ Fossey, head of Arts Development for Guernsey Arts.

‘The Tea Tent is a venue to perhaps do something unexpected, intimate and vibrant – it’s a way to make a mark on one of the most important days of the year for our island. I hope offering a free, high-profile venue is an exciting “takeover” offer for someone in our community.’
