Painting the town blue... Street Art Festival returns to Mill Street

Artists have once again brought Mill Street alive with colour, this time immersing walkers underwater in an aquatic, group effort design.

Art for Guernsey is bringing street art back to the Old Quarter this summer. Following last year’s success with its maiden ‘Diversion’ exhibition, the charity aims to build on momentum and is unveiling its latest show, ‘Immersion’, today [25 June].

The artists spent the past couple of days braving the heat to add colour and life back to the old outdoor canvas.

Artist Tim Gaudion said the group was working collaboratively this year, with a design that aims to plunge passers-by into an aquarium tunnel experience.

‘The Street Art Festival went down really well with the public here last year,’ he said.

‘It really lifts the Old Quarter, which had become a bit of a derelict area.

‘It’s amazing how many visitors come here off the boat, especially on day trips, and it just gives them something nice to discover while they explore. There’s a lot of locations around the world that have been revived by a Street Art Festival. It can turn a town that was down on its knees into a tourist attraction, bringing more footfall to the area and boosting the surrounding businesses.

‘That’s the whole plan of this – to use art for purpose. And hopefully it inspires people, kids to get involved and get creative.’

‘And artists will continue painting the town throughout the summer.’
