Le Platon refinances with 100-year banking partner

NatWest International has secured more than 100 years of a banking relationship with Le Platon residential home with a new refinancing package for the home.

The home, which was founded by local philanthropist Edith Renouf in 1914, has undergone a recent expansion, doubling its number of beds.

The bank was first connected with the home, the oldest residential home in the island, in the 1920s when it was the Westminster Bank.

The home was founded by local philanthropist Edith Renouf in 1914. She donated the entirety of her personal wealth to the home 13 years later.

That same decade, she put the home into a trust with Westminster Bank, and the relationship between the organisations has remained solid ever since.

A commercial loan from NatWest International enabled its recent expansion, which was completed in 2024, which upgraded the home from a 25-bed capacity to a 50-bed capacity.

The latest refinancing is intended to support continued investment in the home and its team in providing high standards of care for its residents.

‘We are delighted that NatWest International remains committed to supporting organisations that make a meaningful difference to local communities across the Bailiwick,’ said Le Platon director John Marren.

‘NatWest International is proud to support the local healthcare sector at many levels, helping to enhance facilities that make a meaningful difference to the wider community,’ said Lynn Whitworth, head of the bank’s corporate and commercial team in Guernsey.

‘We were particularly pleased to work alongside the Le Platon Board and other stakeholders on this ambitious and necessary project, which will help future-proof the provision of care home beds in Guernsey.’

The new wing includes 37 beds that were designed to best accommodate residents with dementia or mental health difficulties.

RSBI representatives were also present at the recent re-naming of the new wing to show the bank’s continued support for the home.
