Miss Jones is in her final year at Southampton Solent University studying graphic design, and has made a commemorative book capturing 80 years of Liberation Day celebrations.

‘I think one thing that made me want to do this is that a lot of people were making photobooks of the 80th anniversary so I thought why not have one for all the years,’ she said.

Research, interviews with local people involved in Liberation Day celebrations – such as Megs Bailey who organised the bunting project during the 80th celebrations – and pictures are all included in this look-back style project.

She has also included personal stories from her great-grandparents who lived through the occupation.

‘My late great-grandparents lived through the Occupation. My gran was evacuated, but my ‘Pop’ had chicken pox so had to stay behind,’ she said.

‘Liberation is something I’ve always celebrated, but as I’ve got older, it’s also become about remembering them. Their stories were passed down but not written anywhere, so being able to capture memories like this has meant so much to me.’

Designed with the future in mind, the book has been created with press studs, allowing new pages to be added over time. As Guernsey marks its 81st Liberation Day today, her vision is for the book to continue growing for decades to come.

‘I want it to be something that could develop over the next 80 years, so future generations can keep adding their stories and reflections.’

Once Miss Jones had completed her final university project this week, she hoped to produce additional copies of the book to share with contributors, local organisations and museums, ensuring the stories it contains remain accessible to future generations.

She said that while doing the project she had learned about different aspects of the Occupation and Liberation in more detail and stories about her family that she did not previously know.
