Vauvert Year 6 leavers go out with a splash

PARTING was more Sweet Caroline than sweet sorrow for Vauvert School’s Year 6 pupils at the bathing pools yesterday.

They prefaced the annual tradition of jumping into the water in uniform with a chorus of Sweet Caroline on the poolside.

James Hamilton and Alfie Wilbraham both 11, said they were excited to move to their new schools and only ‘a little bit sad’ to be leaving their primary school.

James will be going to Elizabeth College in September while Alfie is heading to Les Beaucamps.

‘I’ve really enjoyed meeting all my friends on the bars in the playground and having lots of fun,’ said James, who was awarded the school’s sports trophy for football, swimming and netball.

Alfie said one of his favourite moments at the school was appearing twice in the same whole school photograph. He was awarded the arts trophy for singing and drama.

Olivia Sylvester, 11, will be going to Les Varendes with her friends in September.

‘At Vauvert there are lots of people who are really kind and are easy to make friends with,’ she said.

‘My favourite memories are making fairy doors in the trees with my friends.’

It was not only the Year 6 students leaving the school yesterday.

Teacher Jerry Thomas is moving on after 28 years at Vauvert.

‘I feel really emotional, it’s been my whole adult life working there. I’ve absolutely loved all the children and all the families, including the ones I still see around now. It’s been a real pleasure, I’ve really, really enjoyed it and it’s been a very big part of my life,’ she said.

‘I’ve always loved doing the learning outside the classroom, that’s been one of my real favourite areas, such as the Herm residential trip, that’s always been a big favourite.

‘I loved the experiences such as Victorian day too. History is my strong subject and it’s great to take the children on a journey beyond the classroom.’

Mrs Thomas will be becoming an island-wide teacher, a full-time supply teacher who goes around all the schools.

‘It’s going to be a great opportunity for me to work with other people and other children and I’m looking forward to it,’ she said.

Throughout her time at the school she has taught almost every year group.

She added that the outgoing Year 6 pupils were a great year group and wished them well for their next stage of learning.
