The trial will run from 1 June to 15 September in both years and will permit access between the hours of 5pm and 8am during the current seasonal restriction period.
The decision of the States follows a public consultation which showed a mixed but overall supportive response to a managed change in the island.
The survey highlighted support for limited access at specific times of day, and also identified Longis Beach as the preferred location for a trial.
States members considered benefits including improved accessibility for dog owners and animal welfare benefits, alongside concerns around fouling, animal control, the safety of children, and the potential impact on other beach users and wildlife.
The trial will be monitored. Dog and horse owners will be expected to ensure that animals are kept under control at all times, that any mess is cleared up, and consideration is given to other beach users.
A longer-term approach will be considered after the second year of the trial in September 2027.
‘The cooperation of the community will play an important role in ensuring the trial is successful and that Longis Beach remains a safe and enjoyable environment for all,’ said a States spokesman.
