Reports of delays on Alderney runway project are 'pure speculation’, says STSB

THE States Trading Supervisory Board has dismissed media reports of delays to the Alderney runway project as being ‘without substance’ and ‘pure speculation’.

STSB president Deputy Mark Helyar said that there had been considerable interest from possible contractors at an early tender stage, although no one has yet been appointed to carry out the work.

‘We are working towards all of the previously-reported deadlines, albeit they remain very tight, with the intention of delivering within the timing and delegated financial limit,’ he said.

‘We are acutely aware of the urgency but also of the financial constraints.’

The States of Alderney has also moved to reassure islanders that the project was still moving forward and that a firmer timetable would be published once contractors have been appointed.

‘While it is understandable that a project of this importance generates considerable public interest, it is equally important that public discussion is based on accurate and up-to-date information,’ said Policy & Finance Committee chair Jeannie Cameron.

‘Recent commentary has not always reflected the current position of the project and risks creating unnecessary concern within the community.’

Her fellow Alderney States member Alex Snowdon has raised the fears of the prospect of delays on the project.

He said he was pleased to hear the reassurances.

‘I’m glad to hear the work is on schedule, but I defend speaking out over my concerns because some key milestones in the original programme have not been met.’
