Monday saw the temperature climbing to 32.2C, surpassing the previous record for the month of 30.8C, set on 26 June 1976.

The highest temperature recorded at Guernsey Airport since records began in 1947 came in August 2003 with the mercury hitting 34.3C that day - with that mark under threat this week.

‘As the latest heatwave builds across Europe, we are expecting an extended period of very hot weather lasting until at least Thursday,’ said Guernsey Met Office’s duty observer.

‘After the unprecedented heat last month, this event coincides with the summer solstice, when the sun is at its strongest, and it is likely we will set new temperature records for June as well as a sustained heatwave.’

Temperatures are expected to remain high through the working week, only cooling on Friday to 23C, a more usual temperature for the time of the year.

It will also feel warm overnight, with minimums expected of around 20-22C.

‘While the sun is at its strongest through the middle part of the day, temperatures can continue to rise through the afternoon into the evening as we draw in heat from the near continent.’
