Hosted by Healthcare Group chairman Dr Nick Dunn, the ‘Doctors Decoded’ series will feature conversations covering everything from prevention and wellbeing to diagnosis, treatment and living with long-term conditions. Alongside expert health advice, it will give listeners an insight into the people behind the job titles, exploring what drives their work, their perspectives on healthcare, and the role they play in keeping islanders healthy.
‘More and more people are turning to the internet for health information, trying to understand symptoms themselves or wanting to feel better informed before seeking advice. While there is a huge amount of information available, it can sometimes be difficult to know what is reliable and relevant, as well as applicable to healthcare here in Guernsey,’ said Dr Dunn.
‘Guernsey is a small island and many of us will be cared for by the same doctors and specialists at different points in our lives. As well as giving practical health advice, we want this podcast to help islanders get to know these experts, what really motivates them, and what makes them tick.’
The first episode features Medical Specialist Group consultant urologist Owen Cole, who joins Dr Dunn to discuss common urinary symptoms many men experience but often delay seeking help for.
Covering prostate and bladder concerns, as well as treatment options and the importance of lifestyle changes, the episode aims to reassure listeners that effective help is available for many of the symptoms people often assume are just part of getting older.
The podcast series aims to create a more open and informed conversation around health, helping islanders better understand common health issues, the services available, and when to seek support.
The second episode will feature consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Lauren Green, with the discussion focusing on two common but often misunderstood women’s health conditions, endometriosis and PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome), formerly known as PCOS.
It will explore why many women wait years for a diagnosis and the impact these conditions can have on everyday life, fertility and long-term health, as well as the treatment and support options available.
‘These first episodes highlight topics that affect many islanders but are not always openly discussed,’ said Dr Farid Fouladinejad, CEO at the Medical Specialist Group.
‘It’s a valuable opportunity to hear a GP and specialist discussing them together, giving different perspectives and helping people understand how our teams work together and what support is available.’
The first episode is available to download on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. There is also a video recording on the Healthcare Group YouTube channel.
