HORSES, poultry and dogs were moved from their homes to safety after a hedge fire broke out and spread to a nearby barn in St Sampson’s this afternoon.
Fire crews were called to Courtil de Bas Lane at about 2pm and large plumes of smoke were visible from a distance.
Smoke also filled the lanes as neighbours diverted traffic around the area.
Firefighters used the fire hydrant at the nearby filter with Rue Sauvage to help tackle the blaze and police closed the road from both ends of Courtil de Bas Lane at the junctions with Rue Sauvage and Pleinheaume Lane.
‘Two fire appliances attended the incident, where firefighters found a significant area of small trees, hedge, undergrowth and straw bales on fire,’ said a spokesman for the Fire & Rescue Service.
‘Crews wearing breathing apparatus worked to extinguish the blaze and prevent further spread to houses.
‘A number of horses, poultry and domestic pets were moved to safety by their owners and all seemed unharmed by their experience.’
The fire was brought under control inside the hour.
Fire crews remained at the scene to dampen down the area, as heat retained in the straw bales would likely result in ongoing hot spots and smouldering.
It was the second shout of the day for firefighters, after they were called to a structure fire at 1.25am in Les Martins, St Peter’s. The fire was extinguished shortly after 4am.
