Sunday farmers’ market at the Careening Hard

A NEW Sunday farmers’ market will line the Careening Hard Arm of Crown Pier from tomorrow, bringing together local producers, artisan makers and Asian-inspired street food.

The idea extended from the owners of the off-grid Thai cafe, Ki-Ot, which opened at the end of the pier’s arm earlier this year. Co-owner Tan Blondin said she had been cooking up the idea for a traditional market since she and her husband had secured the chance to use the spot.

‘I’ve had the vision to bring this whole arm to life – not just with our business here,’ she said.

‘It’s a perfect place, right here in the middle of it all. If you live here, you can see it, and visitors in the marinas come here straight off the boats. It’s just so convenient – you don’t have to think about it. So I thought “why not?” It’s a totally new thing, separate from Seafront Sundays, but I think it will add to the whole seafront thing. I’m focusing on Asian cuisine, and local produce – a proper weekly farmers’ market.

‘I’m going to try and get more fishermen and butchers to join in, hopefully in the very near future.

‘And I’m going to reach out to as many restaurants as possible – especially the ones just here – inviting them to come and get their fresh produce at the market – like chefs used to do in the old days.

‘Hopefully we can run it until the end of September, weather-dependent.

‘It’s all come together so quickly. We open this Sunday and the space is 80% full.’
