‘It’s the biggest fire that Sark has ever seen,’ Kevin Adams, Sark’s chief fire officer, told the Guernsey Press while he and his team worked to tackle the blaze.

‘This is huge. We’re talking days to put it out because it’s such a big fire.’

‘We’re fighting it from three different directions.’

He said the whole of the Silver Mines area had been engulfed, covering land equivalent to an estimated 25-30 football pitches.

‘We’ve managed to divert it from any properties. We’re just doing a controlled burn.’

He estimated that more than 40 people were involved in fighting the fire, including crews from both Sark and Guernsey, as well as other capable residents.

Another Sark resident said the area affected was between Port Gorey and the Adonis headland.

‘Fortunately the wind is blowing the fire offshore so as far as I know there aren’t any properties affected,’ they said.

‘The Guernsey Harbours workboat Sarnia has been over and has been dousing the cliffs with water.’
