Jack Fox, 26, of Rohais, St Peter Port, admitted being in charge of a motor vehicle while over the prescribed alcohol limit when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court.
A test at the Police Station had identified 70mcg of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath, twice the legal limit.
One tablet of the class A substance, MDMA, commonly known as Ecstasy, was also found in his possession.
The court was told how Fox had previously been convicted of driving while under the influence of drugs in the UK and had been cautioned for drug possession.
Defending, Advocate Paul Lockwood said his client had been out with friends celebrating the first anniversary of his arrival in Guernsey.
They had been to The Slaughterhouse.
He was not a regular drinker and at some stage ‘everything had gone hazy’, he said.
He was shocked to find the MDMA pill and could only presume that somebody had given it to him in bar.
Population Management had now told Fox that he would be unable to stay in the island due to his previous convictions and counsel asked the court to take that in to consideration when sentencing.
Advocate Lockwood asked if a prison sentence would be in the best interest of taxpayers.
Deputy Judge Russell Finch said the points had been noted but these offences justified a prison sentence.
For the motoring offence, he imposed a prison sentence of six weeks, but suspended it for two years.
He fined him £1,200 and banned him from driving for three years. For the drug possession, which Fox also admitted, the fine was £800.
