£900 fine for motorist who knocked cyclist off an e-bike

A doctor who knocked a cyclist off his e-bike while driving has been fined £900.

Judge Marc Davies said the incident had raised two key lessons – that motorists should be extra careful about cyclists, and that cyclists should wear a helmet.

Rahul Bhintade, who gave a St Peter Port address, pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention at the Weighbridge Roundabout.

The court heard that his car hit the back tyre of an e-bike, knocking the cyclist on to the side of the road.

Mr Bhintade, who was driving, swiftly pulled over to help. The cyclist had not been wearing a helmet, and was bleeding from the back of his head.

‘I do apologise for the genuine accident,’ said Mr Bhintade. ‘The cyclist was in my blind spot, I stopped as soon as I heard and did help. I’m really sorry.’

He told Judge Marc Davies that he was an on-call doctor who relied on his licence to drive to appointments.

The judge took this into account in not imposing a driving ban, but said the incident had raised two key lessons – that motorists should be extra careful about cyclists, and that cyclists should wear a helmet.
