Elizabeth College students buzz with excitement for results

The first Elizabeth College cohort to have been co-educational from Year 7 was buzzing with excitement to receive their GCSE results yesterday, as 45% of marks were graded 9 to 7 – equivalent to A*/A.

Twenty-four students achieved eight or more grades at 9 to 7 and 95% of grades came in at 9 to 4, equivalent from A* to C.

Louis Clark, 16, was one of the happy students, having gained 10 grade 9s.

‘I’m incredibly pleased’, he said. ‘It’s not what I was expecting. I’m a bit overwhelmed to be honest.’

Next year, Louis is staying at the college to study A-levels in maths, further maths, economics, and music.

‘I think it’s going to be a big step up, but I’m excited. I’ve never done economics before, so I don’t know what it’s going to entail, but I’m ready.’

Melanie Hansen, 16, was happy and relieved. ‘I’ve been really stressed’, she said. ‘Probably the most stressed I’ve ever been.’

Melanie walked away with six 9s, three 8s, and one 7.

‘The exams were really stressful at the beginning, but it got easier as it went on. There was a lot of pressure, but the atmosphere of the exam season was also really fun.’

Ollie Sparks, 16, was surprised with his results.

‘In history I only got a 4 in the mock and then I managed to get a 7. I also got a 9 in English literature. That was really unexpected.’

Ollie will be studying PE, psychology and RS at A-level, and hopes to study sports psychology at a European university.

Flora Humphries, 16, received six 9s and four 8s. ‘I’m really proud of myself, because I think I did put a lot of work into it,’ said Flora. ‘I’ve been trying not to think about it too much, but I was pretty nervous this morning.’

Flora will be staying at the college to study music, chemistry and biology.

‘We are incredibly proud of our Year 11 students and all they have achieved,’ said principal Jenny Palmer.

‘These results reflect not only their hard work, determination and commitment over their time at the college, but also the support, encouragement and dedication of their teachers, parents and members of our support staff.

‘I am really proud of them all.’
