‘This particular cohort has shown tremendous character, resilience and commitment throughout their studies,’ said head teacher Martin Haimes.
‘What really is important to us today is that our young people leave us equipped for the future, whatever that may be.’
Alex Lowe, aged 16, was one such student, with all of her GCSE results sitting within the 6-9 grade range.
‘I’m very happy. Particularly with my 9 in French,’ she said.
Alex is set to continue her education with A-levels in history, English and religious studies. She hopes to follow in her father’s footsteps and study the latter at university.
Also very pleased with her GCSE results this year was classmate Frankie Sanham.
‘I’m going to the West Show with some friends to celebrate tonight,’ she said after receiving five 8s.
She will also be studying A-levels from September. ‘I’m planning to take English literature, sociology, religious studies and then also the EPQ.’
Friends Jaycee Palmer and Bachir Boumaaza were also found smiling after opening their results.
Described as ‘models of determination’ by the principal, both were relieved to see that their hard work had paid off.
‘I think I’m most happy with my 7 in French,’ said Bachir.
‘I’m moving on to sixth form next to do French, business, economics and media.’
Jaycee was particularly taken aback by his achievements.
‘I was really worried, but it has actually gone all right,’ he said.
‘I think I’m happiest about my 5 in English. I really didn’t expect that.’
Joely Simon was also in disbelief at her results.
‘I’m shocked I got that high,’ she said after realising she had received a 5 and a 4 in her science subjects when she was expecting a 3 and a 4. Another surprise was her 7 in English literature.
With her grades secured, Joely plans to move on to Sixth Form in September to continue studying history, film, philosophy, and English.
