Contractors are on track to hand over the building late next year, with a soft opening planned over the winter before the doors open fully.

The Guernsey Press was given an exclusive tour of the construction site yesterday, offering a first glimpse inside the next major phase of La Grande Mare’s transformation. The Country Club will bring together dining, health and wellbeing facilities, building on the recently opened Golf Performance Centre and redesigned 18-hole course.

Golf events manager Bonny Hamilton, who has worked with La Grande Mare owners Steve and Maggie Lansdown for 16 years, said construction was progressing well – having survived the first storm of the season.

‘Rok Construction are doing a fabulous job,’ she said.

‘Everything is on track.’

Designed by architects KKA, who have worked on the project for six years, the Country Club will feature a 25m swimming pool, spa, fitness studio, private dining facilities and a members’ lounge.

A brasserie restaurant, boasting panoramic views across the golf course and the west coast, will be open to all islanders and visitors, while dedicated golfing facilities will include a shop, spike bar and private events space.

Health and wellbeing facilities will include a sauna, cold plunge pool, thermal pool and treatment rooms, and a gym with space for yoga and pilates classes.

The design has been inspired by the island’s landscape and architecture, with extensive glazing and outdoor terraces making the most of its setting.

‘Everybody who comes in is special and will be treated that way,’ said Mrs Hamilton.

‘We want them to feel like they’ve enjoyed their experience and been really well looked after.’

Membership plans and prices are due to be announced early next year.

Mr Lansdown said the project, which is expected to create more than 100 jobs, represented a long-term investment in the island.

‘Our ambition has always been to create something exceptional for Guernsey – a place that islanders can be proud of and that gives visitors another compelling reason to come here,’ he said.

The next major construction milestone will be making the building wind and watertight, allowing work on its interiors to commence.
