The wedding last month made local history for two reasons.
Alex Henry and Gavin Fryer were married by Alex’s mum, Annette Henry, and it was also the first wedding ceremony held at Camp de Reves, the eco-friendly glamping site in St Peter’s.
Under Guernsey’s marriage laws, which were modernised in 2021, authorised civil celebrants may conduct legal marriage ceremonies at any time and at any location in the Bailiwick.
‘I have had the privilege of officiating many weddings over the years but being both mother of the bride and the authorised civil celebrant conducting Alex and Gavin’s marriage is something I never imagined would be possible,’ said Mrs Henry.
The new Mrs Fryer grew up in Guernsey, before leaving to attend university in England, where she met Mr Fryer – an engineer for McLaren.
The couple now live in Surrey with their two children, Elliott, three, and Imogen, one. They maintain strong ties in Guernsey.
‘It’s a tremendous honour and a deeply emotional moment for our family,’ said Mrs Henry.
‘Having everyone gathered in Guernsey, in such a beautiful setting overlooking the west coast, makes it all the more special.’
The owners of Camp de Reves, Danny and Jane Barnes, said they were delighted to host their first wedding ceremony, and accommodate the couple’s guests, who had come to the island from across the UK for the week.
‘It feels particularly special that Alex and Gavin have chosen to celebrate their marriage here with their family and friends,’ said Mrs Barnes.
‘It’s also incredibly special that Alex’s mum, Annette, was legally marrying her own daughter while also taking on the role of mother of the bride.’
