While exploring the island, she stumbled upon a door in the ancient site of Le Creux es Fees and discovered that Guernsey has its own fairy bakers. Legend says they would borrow islanders’ ovens and leave a sweet treat behind as thanks.
That story is the heart of Made by Fairies Bakery. Founded by pastry chef Julie, who has 13 years of experience, the bakery is inspired by Guernsey folklore and by a simple belief: the magic still exists if you believe in it, and a slice of cake can brighten someone’s day.
Made by Fairies has just opened its doors in Mansell Street, Trinity Square, and is open Wednesday to Saturday, 8am to 4pm. Visitors will find signature cakes and cookies, tartlets, stuffed croissants, simple breads, and whatever creative treats the day inspires. The selection rotates weekly, though the cinnamon rolls have been a firm favourite since opening day.
Quality and local sourcing are at the core of the bakery. It uses sustainably sourced Belgian chocolate and prioritises Guernsey suppliers, including Guernsey Eggs and the Dairy.
This makes the recipes taste better and gives visitors a delicious piece of Guernsey to take home.
Customers can also order cookies and cakes through the online store and collect them in the shop. Whole cakes ordered online can be collected the next day, ideal for last-minute celebrations.
The bakery is also known for its bespoke and wedding cakes, each designed with creativity to suit the occasion. Examples can be seen on the website and social media, and custom orders can be requested by emailing orders@madebyfairiesbakery.com.
‘We want everyone to feel welcome and happy in our little bakery,’ said Julie. ‘We are so grateful for all the support and positive feedback we have received.’
Next up, the bakery is preparing Halloween cookies and a Christmas menu. Follow Made by Fairies on social media for updates, or pop into the shop.
