Castle Swim raises £7,200 for charities

THIS year’s BWCI Open Castle Swim raised £7,200 for three local charities.

The Guernsey Swimming Club handed £2,400 each to three charities – Guernsey Mind, Safer Guernsey and the Guernsey Voluntary Service – following this year’s BWCI Open Castle Swim. Safer, Guernsey Mind and the Guernsey Voluntary Service were the three beneficiaries of this year’s event.

‘It’s normally chosen between the Guernsey Swimming Club and our sponsors BWCI, so between us we come up with the charity if we’ve had any requests, or if there’s anything going on maybe in clubs that we can also help with, or any charities that are super close to us,’ said organiser Kevin Penney.

This year about 700 swimmers took part in the 500m swim from the Castle Cornet slipway to the Horseshoe Pool at La Vallette.

‘We were really pleased, we didn’t quite match the year before, we were a couple of hundred pounds off last year’s total, but we did find that people were super generous on the day. The day actually went really smoothly and the conditions were really good this year as well, so it made for a really nice afternoon,’ said Mr Penney.

Plans for next year’s event are already under way and the Guernsey Swimming Club is hoping to make it a special one in memory of club stalwart Jo Norman, who died earlier this year.

‘We’re hoping to do something a bit special next year, but what that looks like and what it entails, I’m not sure,’ said Mr Penney.
