Douzaine welcomes Bridge link road but traffic concerns remain

PLANS for a new road linking Route Militaire to the Bridge has been welcomed by St Sampson’s Douzaine, but it still fears that neighbouring roads could be overwhelmed by traffic in the future.

The route has been made possible after the States bought more than £2m. of property by Leale’s Yard, where demolition work is already under way.

The States hopes that a new road will support proposed developments including new homes across the Braye du Valle area.

‘St Sampson’s Douzaine welcomes the acquisition of land and property by the States to enable the proposed new primary road from Route Militaire to link all the way through to the Bridge,’ said douzenier Karl Guille, the parish's planning committee lead.

‘The proposed new primary road will undoubtedly improve access to and circulation within these development sites.’

But Mr Guille said adjacent neighbourhood roads ‘incapable of accommodating increased traffic flows’ could still be affected if the States kept its plan for a secondary road linking the new route with Saltpans Road, which would give future access to development land at Franc Fief.

He added that it would also be important to consider how traffic crossing Lowlands Road could be kept out of Nocq Road and Saltpans Road.

The douzaine accepts that new housing must be built in the area, but it has raised concerns about what it sees as a disproportionate focus on the north of the island for new development, and it opposes any large-scale development at Franc Fief.

‘These proposals will do nothing to lessen the wider impact newly generated traffic flows from up to 1,350 new houses and associated services in St Sampson’s and the Vale will have on the surrounding road infrastructure, which is already at or over capacity at peak times,’ said Mr Guille.

The douzaine has welcomed the States’ plan to draw up more comprehensive proposals for the Braye du Valle housing sites through a master planning process that covers transport, amenities and drainage.

There is a parish meeting at 7.30pm today at St Sampson’s Church Community Hall, where elections will take place for three douzeniers and a member of St Sampson’s Parochial Cemetery Committee.
