You know what they say. You can’t just ‘talk the talk’, you have to ‘walk the walk’.
But is what’s going on in the local economy at present an indication that, after what seems like a long time – maybe for the first time since the hope of bouncing back from Covid – we actually have something good to talk about. This newspaper has, on occasion, been accused of being too downbeat about the island.
While we would deny any allegation that we never have anything positive to say – look at all the stories we do about islanders doing extraordinary things often for those less fortunate, for starters – it is of course fair to say that there’s been little positivity emanating from government.
But when investors, developers and entrepreneurs, all seem to rise up at the same time with some very positive news and activity across the board, is it a fluke, or is it a sign of something bigger happening in the island?
A reason to be cheerful, perhaps?
‘Investment is not just a driver of growth, it is a signal of confidence,’ says Richard Hemans from the IoD. ‘When investors commit significant sums to a place, they are not merely responding to current conditions. They are expressing faith in the future.’
Yes we have challenges, big challenges. But the opportunity also appears to be there to talk ourselves up, and maybe that will breed some more of that confidence.
