Gibraltar has a dog DNA database, so why not us?

Your dog DNA lead story (9 April): It’s a no-brainer idea to make it compulsory for dog owners to have their pets’ DNA registered but not mainly for the reason stated in the story.

There is a far bigger problem on Guernsey – the could-not-care-less owners who don’t pick up their dog’s poop whether it be in the street, on cliff paths, or open areas like the beaches and commons. Not only is it a health hazard and unsightly but the behaviour gives a bad name to those of us with standards who always pick up.

In Gibraltar, where we lived before, DNA registration of dogs was the law even though there was no livestock to worry about. Moreover, from time to time, people were sent out to collect any left lying around for analysis and the guilty ended up with a decent fine. What’s so difficult here?
