Make do and mend at Cobo?

It’s hard to know what to make of a progress update on the look and feel of the new Sixth Form Centre, following an update from the States today.

It could be said that it looks like the government is putting a gloss on the project that won’t be matched by the interior paintwork at La Mare de Carteret. Or should we say ‘Cobo’, which is referenced in the statement more often than the name that the school buildings have gone by for more than 50 years. One can only assume it’s a deliberate move to promote an entirely new beginning.

The States provided a statement to the Guernsey Press after we pursued what looked like an appeal from an individual on Facebook for community help in decorating and readying the new Sixth Form Centre for the new school year.

That post disappeared quickly, and appears to have been replaced by a formal statement saying much the same things – seeking involvement in ‘community opportunities’ and ‘collaborations’, it appears both on the decorative front and in relationships with students.

It’s hard to know what to make of this. Either it’s an inspired move to engender community engagement in a hopefully thriving facility, or it looks like a rather desperate ‘make-do and mend’ project to repurpose an unfit facility which many still believe shouldn’t be hosting sixth formers at all.
