Seeding a consultation

SOME stories you know will just resonate with the public. One such was the prospect to engage in a consultation on what should be happening with the Fort Field, and more pertinently, the meadow-like biodiversity patch there.

The Pollinator Project, which now tends the land, has three ideas for the future of the site, which is beautiful in the eyes of some and horrendous for others.

But it could be said it no longer needs to run its consultation – it has had an impromptu consultation foisted upon it by Guernsey Press readers.

Typically though, the views are mixed.

There’s probably a narrow majority wanting to see the area tidied up, but then there’s a reason that the area has been allowed to go to seed, so to say.

In short, the options are to mow the land and keep it as short grass; to let an area run wild; or to deliberately sow a ‘pictorial meadow’, which would require annual seeding and more management.

The positive is that simply raising the issues around the site has got people talking, and noticing the wildlife potential, even if they don’t particularly like how the area looks.

The combination of flowers, pollinators, and the charity’s passion, is to be welcomed.

For anyone who still really wants to have their say, the meeting takes place next Wednesday.
