The roads around Guernsey are becoming choked with weeds along the bases of walls and also in the gutters.
This has become a problem since the use of a systemic weed killer, glyphosate, was restricted for use in Guernsey. Farmers and other authorised people are still allowed to use it.
The States has bought a couple of special road sweepers to tackle the problem but this machinery doesn’t deal with the weed roots, they merely decapitate the weeds which send up more shoots and continue to flourish within a few days.
I understand that other methods of weed control have been tried by the States but fail to deal with the actual roots.
I believe that Jersey has sensibly reversed the decision to restrict the use of glyphosate and will now allow the use of it; I feel Guernsey should do the same.
I will copy this note to St Peter Port parish in the hope that they can pass this on to the relevant States department for consideration and action.
