Rays of good news detected in Guernsey with the diplomatic resolution engineered by Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez in relation to the Fort Richmond dispute over boundaries.
The First Minister deserves a ‘gong’ for obtaining a sensible outcome to a somewhat tricky problem, and a huge thank you.
The observations of Deputy Laine, in his first-class article published on Monday 12 January bring the microscope to bear on some of the civil service officials’ ethos and their lack of competence.
Officials in the civil service who wished to prolong the unpleasantness surrounding the Fort Richmond quandary seemed to have an almost vindictive streak to want to inflict misery and injustice on inhabitants of this island.
Since when has it been acceptable for officials to dictate policy to our elected representatives?
Officials should be called to account to explain their past actions, not to mention the desire to cause further cost for the States by returning to court to fight a legitimate compensation claim.
