How States members can look islanders in the eye and say they are governing the island beggars belief. They’ve let a generation down, with non-provision of housing for locals, despite, land-banking ad-nauseum, and creating another costly committee, assuring islanders of their sincere commitment to that role. Why don’t they come clean and admit they never had, and never will have, the slightest intention of building homes at a price workers can afford?
They’d far rather enable building for the rich, the buy-to-lets and landlords with multiple properties to keep the misnomer of a rich happy island to the fore.
Now, apart for procrastination, treading water, waffling and posing for happy snaps of themselves in the GEP, they endeavour to excoriate another layer of taxation from islanders by imposing GST. What does it matter if the levy starts at 3% if in six months it’s 10%, and in two years 25%, to sustain the vanity projects from our uncontrollable spendthrift government? I think we’re all aware of sprat to catch a mackerel tactics. How dim do they think we are? How can a government keep taxing their community into infinity to cover their own shortcomings? It’s a disgrace.
To exploit workers, who keep the island running, with an easy-peasy, non-negotiable, tax regime is despicable, while the States of Guernsey talks shop, drains the island of hundreds of thousands of pounds in salaries/pensions per annum, it’s abhorrent and selfish. And plumbs the depths of cynicism. Our States of Guernsey are only people’s representatives when it suits themselves but, sadly, Guernsey’s administration regime has hit a new low.
