Held in Croyde Bay, the 31-year-old made the trip primarily to support two Guernsey youngsters who were in the youth events, but decided to enter the seniors category himself as well.

And in what was his first individual event in the UK ever, he beat a strong field to firstly qualify from his semi-final heat and then win the four-man final to be crowned champion.

A multiple Guernsey and Channel Island champion, Wallbridge was delighted to have secured his best ever success after seeing off the challenge of Alex Chisholm, Ben Chapman and Steve Ley.

'This is definitely the biggest win of my career but it definitely came as a bit of a surprise, because although I was hoping to do well, there were some good surfers I was up against,' he said.

'What was important was that in the final I managed to get a good wave really early on, so I was lucky in that respect and that proved crucial.'
