Bronzes for Guernsey duo at Atlantic Championships
TODD PRIAULX and Lucy Beere return home today after each winning a bronze medal in the Atlantic Championships singles at the Athena Beach Hotel in Cyprus.
Priaulx's chance for gold disappeared when he lost 21-18 to the eventual champion Jamie Walker from England in the semi-final, while Beere also lost to the eventual gold medallist, Ireland's Catherine Beattie, 21-13 in the women's semi-final and both Sarnians finished third overall.
Priaulx's clash with Walker was very close throughout and going into the last end the score was 19-18 to England, at which point Priaulx was unlucky and turned Walker's bowl in for two, instead of slipping past onto the jack for one.
A day earlier, in his last group match, Priaulx beat the experienced Rudi Jacobs from South Africa 21-19 and then, for the second day running, beat multiple Commonwealth Games champion Robert Weale from Wales 21-20 in the semi-final playoff, the Guernseyman drawing his last bowl to touch the jack and make the two shots to take him into the semi-final.
Beere was 6-6 with Beattie, but the Irish star managed to pull clear over the next 10 ends with excellent conversion shots and firing the jack outside the rink.
