Men through to EH Trophy quarter-finals but women lose out
THERE were mixed fortunes for the Guernsey teams in the EH Trophy double-header at Footes Lane over the weekend.
On Saturday, the island men's team reached the last eight of their competition with a 5-3 win over Maidstone thanks to two goals from Zak Damarell and one apiece for Steve Waldrom, Andy Whalley and Josh Kendal.
'It was fantastic to get the result,' said player-coach Whalley.
'There was a tough little period when there were four goals scored in about five minutes in the second half, but fortunately we always had our noses in front.
'Now we have a quarter-final to look forward, followed by the inter-insular, so the hockey comes thick and fast now.
'We have a few little things to work on and we have definitely got a couple more gears we can go through yet.'
Guernsey will host either Basingstoke or London Edwardians in the quarter-finals.
The island women's side were unable to progress into the quarter-finals of their Investec Trophy competition as they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Bishop's Stortford yesterday at Footes Lane. Amy Sharpe scored for the Greens.
