A nett 61 took the 14 handicap well clear of the field and afterwards he thanked his playing partners for keeping his score from him just in case he got over-excited at the prospect of his maiden win coming in one of the biggest events in the CI golfing calendar.
'They didn't mention it to me, which was very nice of them,' said the front-runner as he awaited confirmation of his victory.
'I chipped in for birdie on the second but after that it was mostly pars and a few bogeys,' he added.
He needed have worried, as nobody got close.
Mike Richards' 65 gave him the runner-up prize, but in terrific conditions for low scoring just seven players broke 70.
Mick Marley, a late starter, won the scratch prize for his one-under 69, a shot better than Sean Mills.
