Guernsey make step up into the EH Cup

THE stars of the Great Britain Olympics team currently at Rio 2016 could grace Footes Lane next season as Guernsey have entered the EH Cup.

Andy Whalley's wish has been granted after Guernsey Hockey took the decision to enter the EH Trophy holders in the knockout competition that is open to all clubs in England, including the big guns of the Premier Division.

The island men's player-coach has been eager to test his squad, who have reached the Trophy final for the last five years in a row, in the Cup for a while.

'It's obviously a step up, but I want our guys to experience hockey at that level,' Whalley said.

Although the initial EH Cup schedule caters for a round to be played at the beginning of September, Whalley does not expect the entry to be big enough for that date to be required, which means Guernsey's campaign would likely start on the last weekend of September.

The top sides would not enter the draw until the following round.

'If we got through our first game, we could theoretically get a big home draw against a top team in the next round,' Whalley said.

'I would love to get a big National League side over here.'
