Galpin slashes his 10km PB in Eastleigh
DAN GALPIN turned quite a few heads by slicing over a minute off his 10km personal best in a fruitful Guernsey group trip to Hampshire on Sunday.
Capitalising on superb conditions at the Eastleigh 10km, branded as ‘home of the PB’, the Island Games man placed 11th of 2,300 racers in 31min. 31sec. – a performance that surpasses the all-time bests of several Guernsey greats like Steve Dawes.
Alex Rowe edged his own best down to 32-31 after spending two weeks out injured and Sammy Galpin, Dan’s younger brother, finished 6sec. down on that for another big PB.
All three ran Island Games A standard equivalents but, unfortunately, must wait until the window opens on 1 April to log an official time.
The event met its billing as PBs ran rife among the roughly 20-strong Guernsey contingent.
That included London-based triathlete Megan Chapple and her breakthrough 38-14 for Guernsey women’s honours.
The second Guernsey woman, the previously Alderney and now London-based Emma Etheredge, clocked 39-45 to break the 40min. barrier.
The day before, Thierry Le Cheminant placed a creditable 63rd in the senior boys’ race of the prestigious English Schools Cross-Country Championships in Kent.
Each race had well over 300 competitors from the 45 national school districts, with Thomas Merrien also putting in a good shift to finish 56th in the junior (Years 8 and 9) boys’ competition.
