Fitchet can’t wait to get ‘rocking’ in World Cup qualifier
The domestic weekend double has been completed, now the Island players in the Griffins ranks can turn their attention to the international scene and the biggest week of the season.
Fresh from scoring over 100 runs in the day at the KGV on Saturday to help the GCA Cup holders retain the silverware for the third year in a row, opener Ben Fitchet admitted he is raring to go when Guernsey start their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub Regional Europe Qualifier under way on Wednesday against Bulgaria at Port Soif.
‘Can’t wait to get rocking and rolling,’ he said.
‘It’s good to be back with the Guernsey boys and it’s a big tournament for us, so we’ll be going all in – try and win four wins out of four in the group stages and then knock over whoever else gets to the final is the plan.’
The England-based batter returned to his local club with a fine knock of 69 in the last round-robin match of the GCA Cup on Saturday morning, but it proved to be in a losing cause as Wanderers-Irregulars won a thriller by five runs to earn a place in the final ahead of Cobo on net run-rate after all three sides ended up with a win and a loss apiece.
However, Griffins gained their revenge by winning the final by seven runs, with Fitchet contributing a vital 31 at the top of the order.
‘I’m feeling in good nick,’ Fitchet said.
‘I been playing a lot of stuff in the UK, been netting over there, playing over there, but it took me a little while to get used to the pitch.
‘That first game, I think I was five off about 15-20 balls – it’s bouncier than the Sussex grass wickets. But once I got my eye in I was fine.’
