Short, sharp ‘Supertri’ races added to the local mix

Guernsey’s own take on Supertri will be coming to the island this summer.

As Guernsey Triathlon Club continue to move with the times and embrace trends, they are working three mixed-format Friday night races using this fast and fun style into their calendar.

Previously running under the banner of Super League Triathlon – including a Jersey round in which Josh Lewis has competed – the international series has elites tackling multiple mini ‘tris’ in succession.

Speaking about this event within a wider overview of the 2025 calendar, Triathlon Club president Emily Squire said she was looking to replicate elite-level Supertri, but in a fun and accessible manner.

‘It’s copying, basically, the Supertri that World Triathlon are doing,’ she said of a series that starts in late July.

‘It’s going to be a short, sharp and everyone can come.

‘We’re going to always have food afterwards – it’s a bit of a social.’

Inter-insular competition is also back on the menu this summer.

Guernsey are looking to send 21 competitors to the Gorey Sprint on 28 June, a favour that will be returned with a Jersey presence at 24 August’s Pembroke Olympic Distance Triathlon.

‘It’s made possible because inter-island ferries are very kindly letting us take the bikes,’ Squire added.

‘That will be fun.’

Another area where organisers will be taking notes from other successful events is in their youth programme, which for the first time includes a schools’ triathlon. This will take place at St Sampson’s High on 14 May.

Squire has highlighted athletics’ thriving Zedra X Challenge as an inspiration for this hopefully annual event, which she expects a solid turnout from Year 5-9 students.

‘We’ve had really good take-up from the private schools.

‘States schools, we’re getting there slowly, but we should have good numbers for that.’

The more serious juniors will have the opportunity not only to attend academy days with Jersey, which will take place quarterly, but also to join forces with their inter-island rivals in the British Triathlon Super Series.

The series runs from May to September and was a significant focus for domestic women’s No 1 Hannah Kennedy last season.

‘Rather than Guernsey and Jersey, we’ll be a Channel Islands group going over.

‘We’ll be a region, which is really cool, so we’re really grateful to Jersey for inviting us to that.’

For many of Guernsey’s top triathletes at senior level, the Orkney 2025 Island Games race on 13 July will be the big target.

Off-island elites Josh Lewis and Megan Chapple have looked beyond Orkney, but there is plenty of buzz among the others, especially off the back of the men’s squad announcement last week.

Five of the 10 people in the squad will be racing a Games triathlon for the first time.

‘I think everyone’s really looking forward to it.

‘We’ve got a really good team for it, actually.

‘Injuries and costs have made it so we didn’t need to do a qualifier... it’s a really lovely team with a mix of first-timers and experience.’

Dan Armsden certainly qualifies as an experienced triathlete, and having finally attained selection after years of commitment. He is also the oldest of the first-timers.

‘It’s lovely. He’s probably the most excited about going.’

Shortly before that, several triathletes will be tackling the gruelling Ironman Sables d’Olonne in France on 22 June.

Other popular events lined up on domestic soil include the Novice Triathlon on 18 May and the various ‘tri’ and SwimRun options throughout the late spring and summer.
