The Green Lions have suffered their first ever relegation after missing out on safety by a single point.

GFC had to win on the final day of the Isthmian South Central season and hope rivals Metropolitan Police lost against Sutton Common Rovers if they were to stay up.

Tony Vance’s side held up their end of the bargain, producing a brilliant performance to beat Harrow Borough 3-0 thanks to goals from Jacob Fallaize, Fin Du Port and Charlton Gauvain.

But Met Police struck twice in the final 10 minutes against the already-relegated Rovers, leaving Guernsey’s fate out of their own hands.

It means, after 12 years playing at step four of non-league football, GFC will drop back down a division for the first time in their history.

They finish the season in 19th with 42 points from 42 games, just one point below Binfield and Horndean, and sitting fourth in the form table, having won four and drawn one of their final six games in the fight for survival.

‘Today’s performance from the lads was absolutely outstanding, and we are incredibly proud of their efforts,’ the club said in a statement posted to Instagram.

‘Unfortunately, despite our result, Met Police’s 2-0 win over SCR means we have officially been relegated from the Isthmian League South Central Division.

‘We want to sincerely thank all our supporters for their unwavering support throughout a challenging season.

‘However, this is just the beginning of an exciting new chapter for our club. With the opening of Victoria Park, we are building something special, and we can’t wait to welcome you all to our new home.

‘The journey continues,’ the statement concluded.
