More Muratti disappointment as Guernsey U16s are beaten

Jersey under-16s made their chances count on Sunday at Victoria Park as they lifted the Nigel Gavey Memorial Trophy with a 5-0 win over their Guernsey counterparts.

The margin of victory reflected the clinical nature of the reds in the penalty box rather than the difference between the two sides as the Sarnians created several good chances of their own but were frustrated in their efforts to find the back of the net by a mixture of wasteful finishing and some inspired goalkeeping by player-of-the-match Dexter Fraser.

Martin McLaughlin gave Jersey the ideal start, heading home the opening goal inside the first 90 seconds, but Guernsey responded well and should have conjured at least one goal in the opening half-hour.

However, they found themselves 3-0 down by half-time with Jason Da Silva converting a penalty before Gus Dorosz added a fine third for Jersey.

As Guernsey chased the game after the break, Jersey rubbed salt into the wounds with further goals from Cameron Scott and Sonny Derrien.

‘I just think Jersey took their chances better than Guernsey,’ said Guernsey head coach Darren Sylvester.

‘We created in the first half plenty of opportunities, but we didn’t take them and you get punished in the game if you don’t.’
