GFC Women take point from first English league trip

Aimee Ogier scored Guernsey FC Women’s first away goal in the English women’s pyramid on Sunday as the Green Lionesses picked up a hard-earned point at Bournemouth Sports Reserves.

Anna Gauvain’s side twice trailed by two goals on a day when Izzy Weatherley hit a hat-trick for the hosts, but the visitors showed impressive character to get back on level terms as Calleigh Hedley took her own Southern Region Women’s Football League goal tally to eight from just two matches in an entertaining 3-3 draw.

Bournemouth got off to a strong start with Weatherley scoring twice inside the opening 20 minutes, but on the half-hour Ogier halved the deficit when she pounced from close range to turn the ball home after Candice Bougourd’s corner had been parried by home goalkeeper Maya Newsam.

Seven minutes later Weatherley completed her hat-trick, but the two-goal cushion barley lasted a minute as Hedley pulled it back to 3-2 within seconds of the restart.

It stayed that way until half-time, with the equaliser coming early in the second half with Bougourd involved once again. This time the GFC Women’s captain hit the crossbar from a free-kick and Hedley was on hand to tap in the rebound.

The Green Lionesses are back on the road this Sunday when they travel to Farnham Town.
