Now halfway through their campaign, Rovers are only one point behind St Martin’s and four off leaders North, albeit both have a game in hand.
Head coach Kevin Gillease said that his side had not set a target on the league this season and that he just wants them to carry on their momentum, having now won five in a row in the league.
‘Going forward the aim is just to pick up as many points as we can,’ he said.
‘There are a couple of squads in the league higher up that are more stacked than ours is, we have lost a few players from last season, moving abroad and things like that which has hit us hard, but we’ve had U18s step up and we have started getting more consistent squads.’
After a break for the Stranger Cup group stage, Rovers picked up their good form in the league in the lead up to Christmas with a convincing win against Bels on Saturday at Victoria Park.
‘It was good in patches, you can’t really take too many negatives from a 5-0 win, can you?’ said Gillease.
‘They didn’t make it easy for us, it was difficult as games against Bels have been recently, it really looks like they have turned a bit of a corner.
‘We probably didn’t want the Christmas break, to be honest. We were relishing games and it’s been a bit stop-start since, with the Stranger Cup and the weather, so it’s been hard to pick up momentum again.’
On Saturday Charlie Platt and Steffan Timms both scored twice with Rovers' other goal coming from Ryan Tough.
‘Charlie Platt was excellent, two beautiful goals and be was just a bit of a menace for them all game,’ said Gillease.
The Rovers head coach also praised Harry Ingrouille who went in goal for the game.
‘Adam Bullock was away so we planned on using Stevie Balmer – who we have as our reserve goalkeeper, he plays in the Jackson – but he picked up quite a bad knee injury in the warm-up so we wish him a speedy recovery,’ said Gillease.
‘Harry Ingrouille went in goal and he dug us out of a hole big time.’
Rovers’ next league game is against North in a couple of weeks and Gillease has said he hopes to have a few players return to the squad by then.
‘We’ve got a week's break so hoping to get the numbers back in. We have been without Ty McKane, and Blair Howitt with his Achilles,’ he said.
‘Ty’s injury is not as bad as we first thought, I was worried and I think he was quite worried too, but I think its a sprain.’
Bels are due to play their Guernsey FA Cup tie with Elizabeth College tonight at the Track, 7.30pm kick off, weather permitting.
