In preparation for May's important T20 World Cup Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier A at RAF Akrotiri, Guernsey were due to contest a tri-series against Cyprus and Austria from next Thursday onwards at the host venue.
This T20 tri-series has now been dropped for safety reasons, following an Iranian-made drone striking the UK sovereign base area in Cyprus on Sunday night – with no casualties – and two more drones being intercepted the following day.
But Guernsey Cricket chief operating officer Richard Headington has received confirmation from the ICC that May's event is still scheduled to go ahead as planned.
'We have been closely monitoring developments in the Mediterranean and Middle East, bearing in mind we were due to go over next Thursday for a tri-series,' Headington said.
'We made the decision from a safety point of view that we're going to pull the plug on it.
'We have the World Cup qualifying competition in May and we are hopeful that we can transfer flights and hotels to that tournament.
'There's going to be a bit of a financial hit for Guernsey Cricket, but the players and the team behind the scenes are all onboard – it is what it is.'
The Sub-Regional Qualifier A is set to take place from 16 to 23 May in Cyprus and feature 10 teams battling to make the cut for the Europe Final.
Both Guernsey and inter-island rivals Jersey feature in the same qualifier, albeit in different groups, so they cannot meet before the play-offs.
Headington has highlighted the significance of the now-cancelled tri-series as a 'warm-up' event.
'This was ideal in that we were going to play under ICC conditions and we're playing at the venue we are going to be playing in May.'
However, as part of their altered build-up, Guernsey Cricket are planning to host county academy sides over the Easter period.
'Those will be our pre-tournament warm-up matches,' Headington added.
'Hopefully they will go ahead.'
