Green Lions ‘need to step it up again’ after away defeat

The importance of this Saturday’s clash with fellow play-off contenders Peacehaven & Telscombe ramped up a couple of notches for Guernsey FC following their defeat at Eastbourne United.

The Green Lions suffered just their second loss of 2026 when they were beat 3-0 at the weekend and slipped to fourth in the Southern Combination Premier Division as a result, which makes their next game ‘huge’ according to manager Tony Vance.

‘It is not ideal [slipping to fourth], so we need to step it up again,’ he said.

‘It does not happen all the time, that’s the beauty of being in this league, but it shows we can lose if we do not turn up and that has happened a few times now.

‘We have to take it on the chin and the players have to be honest with themselves that they can do better, as I have been with myself because I can do better, too.’

GFC came close to breaking the deadlock in the first half with Sam Murray heading against the crossbar while Will Fazakerley, Ben Solway and Ross Allen also had attempts on goal.

After the break, though, they fell behind to Charlie Ball’s opener and he then doubled the lead shortly afterwards.

T’yano Wilson put the icing on the cake for the hosts with a third in added time.

‘There are no real excuses. In the first 10 minutes we should have put them to the sword and we didn’t,’ Vance said.

‘They started time-wasting after 15 minutes and their tactics were just to kill any momentum we could build. We could not counteract that and got dragged into it – our game went to pot.

‘It was a team we should be beating but haven’t, so it will get filed in that category along with a few others. I haven’t really got any complaints because we didn’t do enough.’

Horsham YM beat Lancing 1-0 to climb above GFC into third in the table having played a game more than the Green Lions.

Peacehaven & Telscombe are fifth, a point behind GFC, after missing the chance to rise above them following a 3-0 defeat at Crawley Down Gatwick.
