Drillot & co will do ‘absolutely everything’ for Muratti glory

After a successful season at club level, Archie Drillot hopes he can be part of another trophy-winning squad today as he is set to represent Guernsey in the Muratti Vase final.

This will be the North defender’s first senior Muratti final after playing in the semi-final last month and he is happy to have made the final cut to be part of Dave Merris’ squad for this afternoon’s clash at Springfield.

‘It’s great. I’ve been training obviously my whole life and to finally get the opportunity is good,’ he said.

‘I missed out last year as I was on holiday, so I didn’t have the choice, and we won the league this year, which put my name in the hat and I’ve made it to the final cut so I’m happy.’

Drillot, who is the son of former Muratti goalkeeper Ian, added that he is delighted to be a squad member whether it is on or off the pitch.

‘No matter how many minutes it is, or even just sitting on the bench, honestly, I’m proud to be in the final cut, and if I do get on that pitch or if I start, wherever it may be, then I’ll be proud – a very, very proud moment for sure.’

Going into the match, Drillot feels the squad is in a good place.

He hopes they can get the job done of lifting the Muratti Vase on Jersey soil for the first time since 2014.

‘We’re in a good place I think. As an island we’re developing well, we’ve got a lot of youngsters still to come through, and we have some youngsters here, obviously Fin Patterson and Gil Hunter, and some experienced heads as well, so there’s a good mix,' he said.

‘Obviously a lot of the boys play for GFC who have had some good experience this season, and hopefully we can bring that into the Muratti.

‘We’ll put absolutely everything into it, of course.

'Everyone knows what the Muratti means, especially to us local Guerns. It means everything.

‘We’ll do absolutely everything, put our bodies on the line when needed, give it our all for the 90, if not more if needed, but hopefully we can get it done in the 90.’

The full allocation of 269 Guernsey supporters are set to travel to Springfield for the Muratti.

Tickets for Sarnian seating and standing areas are sold out.

The Muratti Vase final kicks off at 12.30pm today at Springfield.
