The 26-year-old posted his quickest season opener yet – 48.64sec. – in winning the 400m hurdles at Wednesday’s 15th Savona International, a World Continental Tour Bronze event held in Italy.

Chalmers eased down off the final barrier but still won quite convincingly, with Spain’s Jesus David Delgado taking second in 49.23 and fellow Brit Josh Faulds following another 0.20sec. later. He now tops the 2026 British rankings from Jake Minshull (49.28).

‘Cheeky opener today in Meeting Savona,’ he said to his social media fans afterwards.

‘I told you this year it’s happening.’

The hurdles ace’s targets in coming months include repeating his Commonwealth Games medal moment at Glasgow 2026 and perhaps challenging Kriss Akabusi’s British record of 47.82.

That evening also had a contingent of Guernsey middle-distance runners contesting a regional BMC event in Winchester.

Eloise Scholes put in the most notable shift, lowering her 1,500m personal best to 4-26.64 as the quickest woman on the night.

The fast-improving athlete used the pace of a mixed race to smash through the 4-30 barrier, leaving now only a small distance to Sarah Roe’s Guernsey record of 4-24.05.

In the fastest heat, Guernsey took a two-three as both Jack Le Tissier and Gian-Luca Robilliard logged Island Games A standards.

Just behind young winner Freddy Boniface, University of Winchester student Le Tissier ran a season’s best 4-00.54 as Robilliard came in just 0.26sec. back in his first ‘metric mile’ of the year.

Veteran Toby Mann (4-23.71) and Mikey Ingrouille (4-23.73) came fairly close to their PBs after posting near-identical times in separate heats.

At just 15, Emil Friedrich went in the fastest heat of the 800m and just missed his recent best with a 1-55.57.
